Squats                                                                                                    Op. 59

Music-Theatre for 28 musicians in seven groups. Requires costumes and

theatre lighting, together with aspects of mime, dance, slide projections,

and electronic sound diffusion.  Originally designed as the opening of a

triple bill, performed by students at the University of York, followed by

Kagel’s Pas de Cinq and Stockhausen’s Trans.

                                                                                                  Duration 20’ 00”

          Composed 1981

Squats is based on Yeats’ division of humanity into 28 types (in A Vision,

1925). The twenty-eight performers are further divided into seven groups

of four. The groups are: RED, TRAMPS, SILVER, BLUE, BLACK,

material derived from a wide variety of sources, including John Cage, Henri

Chopin, Philip Corner, Marcel Duchamp, Edwin London, Seiichi Niikuni,

Glyn Perrin, Emmett Williams, Bruckner, Josquin des Pres, Mozart and

Sibelius. The resulting set of 49 miniature compositions are subjected to a

performance ‘density-grid’ which creates section overlaps in a kind of

          ‘controlled anarchy’.
