The series of three works entitled ‘Decay’ were written on the realization that many musicians ignore the decay of piano sounds - once the sound has been initiated, the important thing is the next note. In each of these works, the next sound can only be performed when the previous sound can no longer be heard. In Decay I, a solo performer must listen intently to each note, to determine when it dies away. In Decay II and Decay III, each performer’s next note is performed at the extinction of his own previous sound, or that of another performer’s sound, as directed by the score.

Based on this linking of listening and action are Decay IV, for four percussion players, which is included in the as yet ‘Unfinished Works’ list (anyone interested in seeing this list should write or email Unique Music). A related work is Divisions III, for 28 orchestral players, where similar principles are extended to the orchestra. Caveat, however: this listening principle tends to enrage professional orchestral players, many of whom would rather ‘get on with it’ than listen!
